Kathi Bowles Scholarship for Women in Technology
Purpose
The Houston Chapter of the Association of Women in Computing proudly awards the Kathi Bowles Scholarship to women who are pursuing technology degrees and have contributed leadership and service to their school, university, or community.
In 2011, AWC Houston plans to award two $1000 scholarships on the basis of merit to women admitted to an accredited two-year technology school, four-year baccalaureate program, or post-graduate program in Texas. One scholarship will be awarded to a 2011 graduating high school student.
History
Since 2000, the Kathi Bowles Scholarship has provided over $75,000 in scholarships for female students pursuing technology degrees.
The scholarship was named to honor the memory of former AWC Houston member Kathi Bowles. Kathi received her bachelor's degree from Auburn University, where she had received many undergraduate honors. Following graduation, Kathi worked as a systems analyst and project leader for a major oil company. She then took a position as a system consultant for a Big Eight accounting firm.
Kathi's peers regarded her as an outstanding professional. In addition, she was very active in volunteer work with children and her church. Kathi Bowles died in 1987 at the age of 30.
